Dr. Eng. Joseph Njoroge

My name is Dr. Eng. Joseph Kibere Njoroge, a seasoned energy sector expert. I am a chartered Electrical Engineer ( Eng. (Hons) C. Eng., MIET, R. Consul Eng., FIEK) who has actively participated in the economic and infrastructural transformational development of Kenya, Africa.

In the latter part of my career I was privileged to serve in the Petroleum, Water and Irrigation and Transport and Infrastructure sectors of Kenya. These experiences enhanced and solidified my understanding of the economic development of a nation first hand.

In the course of a career that spans over 40 years, I am deeply humbled and honoured to have served Kenyans at the management, operational level as well as the senior policy level in the context of Public Service.

I have enjoyed diverse roles that include the Managing Director and CEO of Kenya Power (2007-2013).

Biography

Dr. Eng. Joseph Kibere Njoroge has walked an unconventional yet very inspirational path to earn the rare opportunity to serve Kenyans in very senior levels of public service. Before he was directly involved in the economic transformation of Kenya as a CEO of Kenya Power, a Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, a Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation, a Principal Secretary for the State Department of Transport in the Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure, Housing, Urban Development and Public Works, Engineer was a boy born to the late Ruth Njoroge and Laban Njoroge in extremely challenging colonial conditions.

He experienced a very humble upbringing in Gatundu South, Kibere Village that included the loss of his father in his formative years. In spite of pervasive poverty, Dr. Eng. managed to complete his studies at Muhoho High School and Alliance High School where he achieved remarkable grades. At the University of Nairobi, he graduated with a first-class Honors in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

His academic achievements set the stage for an illustrious and stellar career that led to unprecedented strides in the economic development of Kenya. As a critical leader of the coordination and mobilization of resources, projects’ planning. He oversaw the enhanced generation, transmission & distribution infrastructure for increasing electricity access from about 29% to 75% by adding more than 6 million customers to the starting base of 2.3 million customers in 2013 (that is more than 260% growth in only about 8 years which is an unprecedented achievement in electrification access rate growth, globally.

Dr. Eng. Njoroge is married to hotelier Esther Njeri Kibere and together are the proud parents of a son Isaac Njoroge and two daughters, Dr. Faith Njeri Gichana and Joy Wambui Kibere. He is a proud grandparent to Zoe Nabutilu, Njeri Njoroge, Wambui Njoroge and Bella Amani, Amelia Imani and Paul Simba.
